Pregnant women suffer from a number of symptoms. They gain weight, notice changes in their appetite, morning sickness, missed periods and joint pain. All these are the early symptoms of pregnancy. Hormonal changes that take place throughout pregnancy together with the weight gain and the added stress on the musculoskeletal system causes joint pain. In some severe cases, this pain can interfere with the day to day activities.
Types of Joint Pain
Joint pain during pregnancy may be experienced in the pelvis, hip, lower back, sacroiliac joint pain, knee and groin. This pain is mostly noticed in the first few months of pregnancy. Hormone relaxin produced to loosen the joints, ligaments together with muscles during pregnancy can cause joint pain.
If joint pain during pregnancy has been interfering with the daily activities, you need to contact a qualified health care professional for diagnosis. He/she will conduct a thorough physical examination to identify the actual source of this pain. After this, a treatment plan will be designed.
Treatment for joint pain during pregnancy will vary depending on the actual location. Some of the treatment methods you can use include prenatal massage, warm baths and ice packs. Chiropractic treatment can also be used to treat this pain especially if the pain is experienced throughout the pregnancy. Heating pads together with resting will also make you feel better.
For most women, joint pain during pregnancy lasts through the first trimester. Once the body adjusts to the increase in hormones, this pain will go away. However, some women may struggle with this pain throughout the pregnancy as the joints swell due to increase in the body weight. The best way to alleviate and avoid this pain is exercising. Exercising keeps the joints and muscles healthy. Resting and eating a healthy diet can also help reduce this pain.
