If you suffer from joint pain, it is important that you learn all that you can about joint pain and arthritis so that you can manage the problem effectively with the help of your doctor. One of the most important concepts that you need to master is good nutrition: Consuming a low inflammation diet that reduces inflammation while supporting the health of your muscles, joints, bones, and cartilage. Additionally you should not eat foods that produce inflammation and where you can avoid using anti inflammatory drugs due to their side effects. For example, cortisone when taken for any length of time has a very deleterious effect on bone strength.
Foods That You Should Add to Your Low Inflammation Diet
Include in your diet fish such as mackerel, salmon, trout, and tuna. The fish oil contains omega 3 fatty acids which is anti inflammatory. It has been shown to enable people with rheumatoid arthritis to reduce the amount of conventional drugs that they take. Three ounces of fish contain approximately one gram of omega 3 fatty acids.
Increase the amount of fiber in your low inflammation diet. Foods that are rich in fiber include vegetables, whole grains and fruits. Scientific studies have shown that adding fiber to one's diet results in a reduction in the levels of C-reactive protein in the blood; C-reactive protein is an indicator of inflammation.
You should use extra-virgin olive oil when cooking your food; it contains oleocanthal, a compound that blocks the enzymes that cause inflammation.
Foods to Avoid in Your Low Inflammation Diet
Junk Food/Fast Food - These often contain saturated fats, trans fats, and other substances that may promote inflammation.
Processed meats such as hot dogs and sausages - These contain chemicals such as nitrites that are associated with increased inflammation and even cancer.
Saturated fats - These are found naturally in meats, full-fat dairy products, eggs and other animal-based foods, as well as in junk food and fast food. Full-fat dairy products and high-fat cuts of meat contain a fatty acid called arachidonic acid, which is essential for health but when taken in high amounts may cause an increase in inflammation.
You should also eliminate high-sugar foods such as soft drinks, candy sugared sodas, pre-sweetened cereals, pastries, and sauces. These have been associated with obesity, inflammation and chronic diseases such as diabetes and cancer.
