The role of diet in the management of arthritis is recognized as important in controlling the symptoms. Although medications are often part of the treatment, many medical practitioners recommend diet modification to help reduce joint pain and stiffness. The key to effective management of arthritis with diet is to adopt an anti arthritis diet and to identify and cut down consumption of foodstuffs that tend to aggravate the condition. Patients should maintain a balanced diet by substituting these foods.
The pain and stiffness in the joints is usually caused by worn out cartilage, a protective cushion in the joints that prevents bones from rubbing against each other. Apart from age and over using the joints, this wear and tear can also be caused by inflammation and infections. An anti arthritis diet aims to reduce inflammation in the joints and consequently, to provide relief. The diet also aims to reduce calorie intake in patients who are overweight or obese. Reducing excess body weight eases the pressure on the joints and helps to relieve the pain.
Substances in food that can cause inflammation generally raise the level of uric acid in the body. These substances are low or non-existent in an anti arthritis diet. Many patients with arthritis report improvement after increasing consumption of omega 3 fish oil. Studies show that omega 3 helps to reduce the production of enzymes in the body that contribute to inflammation and wear in joint tissues.
The Mediterranean diet, which is rich in olive oil should also be part of an anti arthritis diet. Olive oil is great for protecting joints from inflammation. Classified monounsaturated oil, olive oil is also a healthier alternative to other types of oils. Foods that are rich in antioxidants, including vitamin c, selenium, carotene and flavonoid rich foods, protect the joints from free radical damage and reduce tissue damage.
