Shopping lists are imperative to eating healthy as many unprepared trips to the supermarket lead to the purchasing of unnecessary and unhealthy food items. That is why it is best to plan ahead and write down a healthy shopping list. The best way to start designing your shopping list is to research before you visit the store. You can often find the nutritional profile of most food items online which will help you add and eliminate items from your shopping list.
Your first stop when visiting your grocery store should be the produce section. The produce section is typically in the front of the store and carries an abundant source of healthy fruits and vegetables. Choose different colored fruits and vegetables as their colors indicate what vitamins and minerals they contain. These are key food items to developing a healthy shopping list.
The next trip should be around the aisles of the store where you will often find the meats, fish, poultry, and dairy items. The AHA recommends that you have a minimum of 3 servings of fish per week as they contain healthy omega 3 fatty acids which are good for your heart. Choose lean cuts of meat, buy skinless poultry, and watch your portion sizes when eating meats like beef. Opt for turkey bacon over regular bacon to save yourself some unnecessary saturated fats. If you have a choice, always avoid all forms of dairy products for your healthy shopping list.
The next items to add to your list are healthy whole grain and 100 % whole wheat food items like cereals, pastas, bread, brown rice, and quinoa. Your next items will be healthy canned food and bottled choices like vegetables, fruits, beans, soups, tuna, chicken breast, and low fat salad dressings and bread spreads. Unless you want to buy frozen fruits or vegetables, the frozen food aisles should be skipped with the exception of some whole grain food choices like waffles and bagels.
Most of the foods on your healthy shopping list should come from the perimeter of the grocery store as this is where you will find healthy fruits and vegetables. Make sure you compare brands when shopping as some brands offer healthier alternatives over others.
The foods you eat today will not only affect you today, but for the rest of your life, which is why you should always strive to eat as healthy as you can.
