Are you wondering what food you should include in a healthy grocery list? There are many excellent food choices that will strengthen your immune system and help prevent serious illnesses.
One of the most important items in a healthy grocery list are fresh fruits and vegetables. All of them provide antioxidants, which help to fight cancer and other diseases. They also are anti aging. They also provide other essential vitamins and minerals. Generally the darker a fruit or vegetable is, the more antioxidant power it has. Broccoli, leafy greens, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are particularly good choices. Citrus fruits and peppers provide a lot of vitamin C.
Fruit and vegetables also have a lot of fiber. There are other sources of fiber that you may wish to include as part of a well balanced diet. These include whole grains, barley, lentils, oatmeal, kidney beans, black beans, and brown rice.
Calcium is essential for bone and muscle health. There are several foods that provide this important mineral besides dairy products. These include tofu, salmon, broccoli, cabbage and soybeans. In addition, some varieties of soy milk and orange juice have calcium added.
A healthy grocery list should include protein sources. This is necessary for the maintenance of cells and is important for normal functioning of many of the body's systems. Some protein is available in many foods, including vegetables. Particularly good sources are quinoa, black eyed peas, lentils, tofu, fish, spinach, almonds, cashews, and any kind of beans. Meat also provides protein, but consumption should be limited on a healthy diet. This is particularly true of red meat. If you want to eat chicken, the skin and any fat should be removed first.
When you are shopping with a healthy grocery list, the best food choices are those that are organic. It is even better if you can buy items that are local as some nutrition is lost when fruit and vegetables have to be transported long distances.
