Inflammation is basically a series of processes involved in the body's first immunological response aimed at eradicating harmful particles such as dead cells and pathogens to facilitate the healing process. The general signs of inflammatory response include swelling, fever and redness often accompanied by pain brought about by infection or injury.
When you eat foods that are rich in saturated fatty acids and sugars, it stimulates onset of inflammation. Inflammation may give rise to diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and Alzheimer's disease among others.
Most vegetables have anti inflammatory properties and are therefore vital to reduce inflammation. Some of these anti inflammatory vegetables are:
A. Onions and Garlic
These are some of the best and readily available vegetables with anti inflammatory properties. They contain high amounts of allicin and quercetin compounds which boost delivery of sulfenic acid to inhibit the inflammatory response cascade.
B. Dark Green Leafy Vegetables
These include pumpkin leaves and kale. They are scientifically proven to contain high amounts of vitamin E, a compound that helps protect your body cells against harmful inflammatory mediators and triggers called cytokines. Besides vitamin E they contain essential elements such as iron, calcium and zinc that boost your body's immunity.
Beetroot juice might not be pleasant for your taste buds, but they contain high amounts of antioxidants such as vitamin C and betalain which reduces inflammatory responses. It is a highly recommended vegetable for chronic heart diseases and cancer patients.
D. Hot Pepper
This includes chili and cayenne pepper. They contain good quantities of antioxidants, capsaicin which inhibits the initiation of inflammatory response. However, these work differently in different individuals. It might either worsen or reduce inflammation in you.
Ginger contains chemical components that inhibit activity of harmful factors such as Necrosis Factor (NF) - kappa B protein which may trigger inflammation in your body. Turmeric is another vital one in that vegetable family.
You might assume it, but red tomatoes are the most significant vegetable with anti inflammatory properties. Cooked tomatoes contain elevated quantities of lycopene, a chemical that reduces the levels of inflammatory triggers in your body.
