Diet is an essential part of living a healthy lifestyle. There are several unhealthy foods we should avoid as consuming them can lead to obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure and even cancer. If you want to eat a nutritious diet, a good place to start is knowing which foods and additives are not healthy.
Frozen dinners and pre-made meals may be convenient, but they contain preservatives, lots of sodium and even sugars. They may have some nutritional content, but the chemicals added make them unhealthy foods. A much better option is to make your own stews, soups, and so on when you have the time and freeze them. By preparing your own food you control all the ingredients that are added. Instead of using a lot of salt, for example, you can enhance the taste by adding herbs and spices such as turmeric.
Fat content needs to be kept to a minimum. Saturated fats are particularly damaging to the heart and can lead to other health problems. Fish is a better option than meat and provides good omega 3 fatty acids. Beef and chicken with the skin are unhealthy foods. You can get plenty of protein by eating any type of bean, tofu, and lentils, and they do not contain harmful fat. Olive, coconut and hemp oils are good for us rather than vegetable oils.
Sugar is present in almost everything we buy, including such things as pasta sauces, soups and so on. Corn syrup contains a lot of sugar and is found in cereals and many other items. If you check labels, you will probably be surprised at the amount of fructose and other additives present even in foods considered "healthy". Instead of buying cereal, you can make your own granola or cook oats and other grains and add fruit to sweeten it.
White bread and other food that contains refined flour are lacking in nutrition. Much of it is lost during processing. Flour that has been bleached can be harmful to our health, and this is commonly used in bread and pastas.
These are unhealthy foods that should not be part of a nutritious healthy diet. Avoiding them can help prevent obesity and many other health problems.
