Mother Nature certainly knows what's best, especially when it comes to one's health. The following are some of the best anti inflammatory foods that you can take to keep things in check, though also remember that it's also how you consume your food - big meals will boost certain markers such as C-reactive protein levels in your body.
Wild Fish Fat
The omega 3 obtained from cold water fish is fantastic for diminishing levels of prostaglandins, a substance that heightens inflammation levels. If you don't eat fish, you can add this to your diet in the form of supplements. Just know this: Studies have shown that omega 3 has just as much effect as ibuprofen does on the body when combating arthritic pain. Of course, too much of anything is never good, so take it in increments.
Dark Leafy Greens
Kale is a fantastic example of one of the best anti inflammatory foods out there, as it's high in quercetin, an anti inflammatory antioxidant that fights against arthritis. Spinach, collard greens and broccoli are some other examples.
The general rule is, the redder the better - this is because red tomatoes have high levels of lycopene, a pigment that is known to reduce general inflammation in the body (especially the lungs). If possible, cook them to further boost lycopene levels.
They will only be effective if they're free of added sugars! Check the ingredient labels as always, but most importantly, know that studies have shown fiber to be a fighter against C-reactive protein, the number one indicator of high inflammation levels. By replacing your white bread in this form, you'll be keeping yourself healthy while feeling much more full.
Keep this fruit at the top of your grocery list - research from the Oregon Health & Science University have stated that tart cherries in particular are one of the best anti inflammatory foods obtainable. Fruits may contain sugar, but if you're going to make an exception, this is it. The antioxidant element in these cherries is called anthocyanin, and has been linked to reduced levels of inflammation. In fact, effectiveness are the same as those that are achieved by commercial pain medications on the market.
These are certainly just some of the best anti inflammatory foods out there, but be sure to add these to your shopping cart the next time you got to the supermarket.
