Some women experience joint pain during pregnancy and the discomfort can be very alarming, so it's important to know how to manage the condition in order to remain calm. More than half of pregnant women suffer bone, muscle or joint pain. This form of pain normally occurs after the fourteenth week, and the extra weight is a good explanation for the aches.
Most people are aware of the fact that pregnancy comes with a variety of body changes, such as hormonal changes and weight gain that influence one's appetite, mood, and overall behavior. Most people are unaware of the elevated chance of joint pain during pregnancy.
Regardless of the cause of your joint pain during pregnancy, you need to be cautious when choosing what to use to manage the condition, because medications and supplements can have negative effects on your unborn baby.
Pelvic Girdle Pain
The pelvic joints start to loosen during pregnancy. This helps to make childbirth easier at the end of the pregnancy, although it can cause discomfort. Pain associated with pelvic girdle joints usually worsens if the weight on the unborn baby results in changes in balance and posture. Medical experts recommend treating this discomfort with certain medications, and mobility aids as well as some lifestyle changes.
Aching Ankles and Feet
Ankles, and feet can also suffer discomfort during pregnancy. This is because of fluid retention and swelling in the joints. This happens when the unborn baby presses key blood vessels, resulting in circulatory complications. Raising the feet while you lie or sit down can help reduce accumulation of fluid. It is also advisable to wear stockings.
Painful back joints can occur in most pregnancies. This problem is caused by the extra weight as well as balance issues that are direct results of supporting the unborn baby. If you suffer severe back pain, be sure to contact your doctor straight away. For minor cases, be sure to wear flats and maintain good posture at all times.
Use exercise, massage and watch to minimize the discomfort before turning to any kind of drugs. You can also utilize cold and heat compresses to help manage joint pain during pregnancy.
