If you are wanting to prepare a healthy shopping list, there are many items that can be included from the different food groups. Eating a nutritious diet is easy to do, even if you are on a budget.
The most important items for a healthy shopping list are fruit and vegetables. These provide fiber, vitamins and minerals, and antioxidants. Leafy green vegetables have protein. Calcium is present in broccoli and kale. We also need vitamin C daily, as it is not stored in the body. Citrus fruits as well as peppers and broccoli provide this vitamin.
Fruit such as berries and even grapes can be bought in season or when on sale and frozen. Frozen grapes are a very sweet and healthy snack. Other vegetables that are particularly rich sources of antioxidants and nutrition include broccoli and Brussels sprouts. Organic fruit and vegetables are the healthiest choices and also have superior taste. Some pesticide residue will remain on non organic food even after thorough washing.
A healthy shopping list can include other food that is rich in protein. There are many varieties of beans and legumes, and all of them have protein. These include garbanzo, navy, black, lima, edamame, kidney, black eyed peas and lentils. A delicious and nutritious soup or casserole can be made with beans and many varieties are nice additions to salads as well.
Other food that provides a lot of protein and is very good for you includes tofu, soy or nonfat milk, fish, and quinoa.
Eating a wide variety of fruit, vegetables and beans will provide you with plenty of fiber. However, if you want to include other food that has plenty of fiber, oats, whole grains, barley and whole wheat pastas are healthy sources.
If you wish to include snack food in a healthy shopping list, unsalted nuts such as cashews, almonds, and sunflower seeds have protein which will also keep you feeling full for longer and they are not high in calories.
