Calcium is important in the formation of muscle and bone and facilitates blood clotting as well as proper heartbeat. Thus, it is highly essential for pregnant women, helping in proper growth and development of the unborn child. Insufficient calcium consumption can lead to the baby being delivered with weak bones. Examples of healthy foods to eat while pregnant that will give you calcium are almonds, broccoli, black beans and kale.
Iron has several uses and functions in the human body. It is important in hemoglobin production, helps to keep stress levels down and helps to keep the immune system strong. During pregnancy, a woman's body requires more iron than usual. This is because the unborn baby needs constant supply of oxygen. Green leafy vegetables are healthy foods to eat while pregnant to help your body get sufficient quantities of iron.
It is quite normal for a woman who is pregnant to crave for foods, some of which cannot be said to be healthy foods to eat while pregnant. It is okay to occasionally give in to these cravings; however, you should ensure that you get all the essential nutrients form other food items.
