Joint pain that comes about as a result of consuming particular food types results in a condition known as gout. Uric acid in extremely high levels present in the body crystallizes and deposit in tissues and joints and cause inflammation. Foods with lots of purines form uric acid as they split up and develop uric acid in excessive amounts. Below are good examples of foods that cause joint pain.
Organ meats like kidney, liver and heart have high levels of purines. Tongue, meat extracts, mince meats, bouillons and broths are other types of meat that should be avoided. Game meats such as duck, goose, turkey and pheasant are also classified as high-purine foods.
Several fish species also contain high-purine levels and as such can lead to joint pain. Foods that cause joint pain like mackerel, herring, anchovies, mussels and scallops are just some of the fish species you need to avoid. Fish eggs might also cause joint pain since they also have high levels of purine.
Just like animal products, legumes and vegetables also contain purines. For this reason, they are considered foods that cause joint pain. Good examples are spinach, peas, asparagus, beans, cauliflower, mushrooms and lentils which are all high purine foods. In case you are suffering the effects of gout, avoid these food types and consult your doctor. However, if you do not have gout or any other forms of joint pains, you can eat legumes and vegetables in moderation since they are excellent sources of minerals and vitamins.
Several grains and particular grain products contain moderate to high purine levels. Beer in particular has high purines and the same applies to wine and hard liquor. Yeast commonly used for brewing alcohol is one of the major leading causes of joint pain. Whole grain breads and cereals, wheat bran, wheat germ and oatmeal on the other hand have moderate purine levels. Again, some foods mentioned are highly beneficial; therefore, if you are already suffering joint pains or gout, consult your doctor who can also guide you and offer advice regarding foods that cause joint pain. To eliminate the condition, patients are often advised to eat a balanced diet and maintain a healthy body weight.
