Prescription medications such as ibuprofen have been the conventional treatment option for chronic inflammatory conditions like arthritis. Unfortunately, these medications have their own unique set of side effects. For example, ibuprofen carries the risk of gastric bleeding, rashes, dizziness and in some cases even heart attack. People are now more often pursuing natural ways of dealing with inflammation, including eating more fruits and vegetables.

Previously not listed in the anti inflammatory fruits category, pineapple is an unlikely entrant. It gets its anti inflammatory properties form a component known as bromelain. This chemical has for a long time been used in the health sector to treat digestive disorders. However, it is known for its capacity to sooth the pain and inflammation experienced by arthritis patients and people suffering from conditions like gout, cramps and muscular injuries. Bromelain is concentrated in pineapple stems, it is therefore advisable to eat pineapple stems to get the most quantities of bromelain.
Tart cherries are rich in anthocyanins. This is a group of compounds which have similar physical and chemical reactions compared with conventional prescription anti inflammatory medication. These chemicals work by inhibiting Cox-1 and Cox-2, which are enzymes connected to the anti inflammatory response. They work naturally without the risks associated with prescription medication. Drinking juice made from tart cherries reduces pain and inflammation especially in patients with arthritis.
They are listed among anti inflammatory fruits because of their high levels of phytosterols, omega 3 fatty acids and carotenoid antioxidants. Phytosterols, specifically beta sitosterol, stigmasterol and campesterol preempt the synthesis of prostaglandin e2 by connective tissues. Prostaglandin e2 is a compound which aids in the inflammatory response. Its inhibition by the phytosterols found in avocados greatly enhances its anti inflammatory properties.
Apples have elevated levels of phytochemicals, specifically flavonoids like catechin, quercetin, chlorogenic acid and phloridzin. Apples act as great anti inflammatory fruits as a result of their polyphenol content. Polyphenols found in apples even have a protective influence over arthritis and workout induced muscle damage. This effect reduces the swelling and pain associated with inflammation and expedites recovery from muscle damage.
